Spokeswomen:
Liza Mickens
Co-founder, Intern Programs Director + Official Spokeswoman
Great, great-granddaughter of Maggie Walker
Liza advocates for a more complete narrative of the story of suffrage and the fight for gender equality in America. In addition to representing her family's historical legacy for over a decade, she has been speaking out on gender equality since 2018 and now leads the VoteEquality intern program. A 2019 graduate from JMU, she has a keen interest in the fashion industry which she balances with her work to change the world for future generations.
Liza is definitely the hippest / coolest member of the VoteEqualityUS leadership team! It's okay, we can all admit it.
Jess Kujala
Co-founder, Vote Equality Tour Director
Jess advocates for all students to have a voice in the push for constitutional gender equality. She first engaged with the VAratifyERA effort when the #iScream4Equality tour came to the Mary Washington University campus in 2019. Her stellar organizational skills were soon in the mix with other stops around the state and now she is leading the tour(s) for the nation.
Jess is a real life Wonder Woman, simultaneously excelling at a job, mothering three kiddos, and a demanding volunteer role at VoteEquality!
Shelby Quast
Co-founder, Strategic Development Director
Shelby has long advocated for women and girls' rights and equality around the world. She is a human rights attorney who leverages that background to advance gender equality issues in the United States and internationally. Prior to working with the VoteEqualityUS team she worked with Equality Now (Americas Director), a sponsor of both VAratifyERA and VoteEquality.
Shelby is a badass with the biggest heart, most level head, and an ease about her despite the crazy in our world.
Kati Hornung
Co-founder
Executive Director
Kati advocates for an equality table so large every American can find a seat. She led the successful VAratifyERA campaign and now leads VoteEquality. Kati has a professional background in accounting and software consulting. Although initially involved in advocacy because of her oldest child's interest, she rediscovered a passion for feminism that had been simmering on a back burner since childhood.
Kati is very "task oriented" and the task she most wants to accomplish is the complete dismantling of systemic gender inequality. Step one: closing the equality gap in our Constitution.
Tonja Roberts-Brooks
Co-founder, Outreach Director
Tonja advocates for equality in America to mean ALL of us. She is an attorney who first became involved with the VAratifyERA Women's Equality Legislative Summit. She is now the Director Outreach for VoteEquality and invites anyone interested to join us on this historical effort.
Tonja is a "let's just get to it / get it done" kind of advocate that continually pushes toward the finish line, no hold barred. Her strength is her positive energy, momentum, and attitude!
